Just a simple question: Assuming I have capital gains to offset, if I own a stock that's down $1k at the end of the year, shouldn't I sell it, wait 31 days, and buy it back?

A bit more info about my specific situation:

  • 33% marginal tax bracket
  • Portfolio: 90% lazy, 10% stocks I've picked
  • avg. about $15k/yr in realized capital gains

I've never sold anything but I have a few stocks that are definitely down since I bought them. I honestly don't pay that close of attention but I'm thinking before the end of the year I should sell them, right? And if I really want them, just buy them back 31 days later.
