I live in NYC and do not own a car. However, I will be in North Caroline in October for a wedding and need to rent a car for the weekend.
Since I do not have insurance, what do I need to make sure I do ahead of time in order to be protected legally, and practically without paying an arm and a leg at the rental car counter?
I have all the credit cards with great benefits: amex platinum, chase sapphire preferred, chase freedom, etc. My understanding is that they only offer a damage waiver for free when I rent the car, and that I still need at least liability insurance. I believe I can get this through them as well for a fee.
Also, if something were to happen (accident, fenderbender, etc), is this credit card waiver and insurance sufficient? Pain to go through? Or is it worthwhile to just buy the rental agency's insurance and I don't have to deal with paperwork, getting a refund, etc?
Thanks in advance!
