I am remodeling a late 70's home in the process of stripping the floor i found 5/8" particle board that was covering a 1/2" plywood sub floor. The particle board was in rough shape and i had no doubt that it needed removing as it had spots where it had taken on water all over and was contributing to a bad smell. They had a paper material between that and the plywood that was still in good shape and for the most part the ply is in fine shape, only thing i don't like about it was that it wasn't glued down and its not tongue and groove. The area we are remodeling is down to the studs and we have removed all interior walls so its just an empty shell from that regard. I am looking for the best thing do put over top of the 1/2" ply as its not a suitable sub flooring by itself. In an ideal world i would tear out the 1/2 and put down 3/4" T&G OSB and glue it down but ultimately i don't think this is going to happen. What is my best route to make this as solid as possible without too much rework? My current thoughts:Brace any weak spots in the floor from underneath using blocking between joists. cover plywood sub floor with 1/2" (15/32) plywood off-setting all the joints from the floor below. I think i should use glue to glue this second layer down to the previous floor, screw it down as well as nail it with a nail gun.Any thoughts or concerns with this approach? via /r/DIY http://ift.tt/2xtGUvf
