Hi /r/frugal,
I'm having a dilemma in regards to kitchen trash bins and the evil that is house flies and ants.
I've been using this basic can. I've replaced it with a similar model thinking that can was broken, but the lid is not cutting it anymore. If even a small piece of food is in there, the flies get through the cracks then invade the kitchen (a couple have made it into the fridge now).
It's costly to have to empty the trash frequently (especially when it's only half-full) and buy trash bags.
My windows are screened, kitchen clean and I don't leave food/dirty dishes around. I do vinegar traps and ant traps and tie the bag strings every time I throw anything away. I'm in a small apartment with no ant infestation. I can't place it outside/in a cupboard either.
My research online has found that the cans with a good price are either too small/for bathrooms. The really nice ~13 gallons run upwards of $50 (such as the metal ones).
Any recommendations for trash cans less than $35 with strong lid seals? Ones that have worked for you, where you bought them, etc. I'm low on cash for the next two months- when I can afford it I'll invest in a nice one but can't right now.
The only similar thread I found was for pets.
Thank you!
