This was my first attempt at using Rit Dye on Pmags and I was really happy with the outcome. Below is a quick tutorial for anyone interested. Feel free to comment or PM me with any questions! Thanks to u/archeantus_1011 and u/Dionysusigma for the inspiration and tips!Supplies:“Sand” colored Magpul Pmags ($10.99 at primaryarms.com)Rit Dye (8oz liquid, $3 at Walmart)Cheap stainless steel or aluminum pot/bowl large enough to submerge a Pmag horizontally ($6.44 at Walmart)Cheap tongs ($1 at Dollar Tree)Paper towelsDisposable plate, cardboard, or something similarGlovesPrep:Remove the dust cover, base plate, spring, and follower so you are left with the Pmag shellPlace a few sheets of paper towels on top of a disposable plate, cardboard, etc (you will rest your tongs on this as well as place the wet Pmag on this upon removing from the pot)You can use gloves if you would like, but they aren’t necessary. I would also recommend wearing clothes you wouldn’t be mad staining in case you get Rit Dye on themThere is no need to strip or sand the Pmag when using Rit Dye, as it will adequately penetrate and stain the materialProcess:Fill your pot/bowl with enough water to submerge a Pmag horizontally with an additional inch of water covering it. You can use a cheap bowl instead of a pot if you’d like. It works just as well as long as it’s large enoughPour about half a bottle of Rit Dye into the pot of water and stir with the tongsHeat the pot of water and dye on the stove and bring to a simmer. You want the water to be just below boiling. Keep the stove on with the pot on the burner during the entire dying processUsing the tongs, place the Pmag into the pot so it is lying flat horizontally for 5 minutesUsing the tongs, flip the Pmag over for another 5 minutes. I found 10 minutes was the perfect amount of time to get the shade I wanted. The longer you leave them in, the darker they will dyeUsing the tongs, carefully remove the Pmag from the pot and place it on the plate with paper towels to prevent dripping (Rit Dye stains pretty much everything, so use caution)Using the tongs, run the Pmag under cold water for a minute or two. Dry off and place on some paper towels to continue dryingIf you want to dye the base plate and dust cover the same color as your Pmag, follow the same process above – 5 minutes on one side, flip, 5 minutes on the other side, remove with tongs, place on the plate with paper towels, rinse under cold water, and allow to dryI would allow a few days to dry before using them. Then reassemble and you are good to go! If you plan to dye multiple Pmags different colors, empty the pot of dye you previously used, rinse it out, wipe it with a paper towel, and repeat the process from start with the new color. The dye won’t stain an aluminum or stainless steel pot/bowl, though I still recommend buying a cheap one for this project.Cheers! via /r/DIY http://ift.tt/2wW8uNi
