Hi folks,I'm hoping you can give me a hand making sense of this wiring situation. My wife and I recently purchased an older home, and we're changing out the outlets/switches to update the look. There's a 2-gang box in the dining room which has both a dimmer and a switch connected to it. The dimmer doesn't appear to do anything, and the switch controls both the dining room and the kitchen light. We'd very much like to be able to separate the control of these two lights. The thing that confuses me is that there are 5 wires coming into the box, what looks like 2 hots (black) and 3 neutral (aged braiding that I'm assuming is supposed to be white).I'm not sure which of the hot wires is the source, and all I have is a non-contact meter which goes off whenever it gets near the entire box (until I turn off the power), so it isn't much help. Either way, one of the blacks is pigtailed into both the switch and the dimmer, with the other black connected to the other end of the switch, and the dimmer connected to one of the neutrals. The remaining two neutrals (at least, I think they're neutrals) are connected to one another. Can you folks give me some indication of what's going on in here, and how I can re-wire this effectively? I've included some poor quality photos to try and give a better idea of what's going on.http://ift.tt/2fXUVHr! via /r/DIY http://ift.tt/2k88Or4
