Hello everyone.

So this week my partner accidentally paid our rent (£925) to her old landlord. A silly mistake, but it was in her saved payments on her online banking, and these things happen.

We have contacted the old landlord (a property management company) who have said they will sent the money back, but will charge £10 for doing so. (She lived there well over a year ago, there was no outstanding rent and no unsettled damage or anything like that).

We need the money back ASAP, as our current landlord is busting us to pay the rent ASAP (even though we've explained the situation and are doing everything in our power to sort it out).

Even though it's only £10, i'm pretty annoyed about it, because I don't know what right they have to take £10 off of us, just because we accidentally sent them some money. I 'm pretty sure that if they somehow accidentally sent us money, we would have no right to keep any of it! (nor would we expect to).

So once the money gets sent back to us, I was planning to phone them up and argue with them until they send the money back (it's not just a matter of principal, times are tight!). What i'm wondering, do they, legally, have any right to retain any of our money from an accidental payment? Obviously, I have no intention of taking them to court or anything, but before (if) I phone them I'd like to know if i'm in the right or not? Is there anything else I should know, or have prepared before talking to them?

Thanks!
