I went out to get my car (paid it off last week), which was parked on the street in NYC and I found two notes and a DVD of the incident on my windshield. Someone driving an Enterprise Rental van hit my car the previous afternoon and drove off after damaging it pretty badly (as well as the car in front of me). Luckily two witnesses left statements, and a delivery driver with a Go Pro camera on his helmet recorded the whole thing and gave me a copy of the video.
I called the police to file a report, and called my insurance company (geico), but both basically told me that tracking down the driver would be too much trouble and that if I wanted my car fixed I'd have to claim against my collision insurance, pay the deductible, and that my rates may rise. I'm annoyed because I have the WHOLE THING ON VIDEO, so it's not like there is any ambiguity about who is at fault.
I called Enterprise to file a claim with them, but they wouldn't give me the driver info either, and said that they'd "get back to me in 10 days". Do I have any recourse here? Should I just pay to claim it on my insurance and be done with it, or pursue the other driver? If the later, does anyone have any suggestions about how to go about it most effectively? I know that Enterprise requires you to show proof of insurance or purchase theirs before you take out one of their cars, so I feel like in theory it should be straightforward.
