If this is not the sub for this please let me know, but because I am asking mostly for financial advice I thought it seemed appropriate.
What do I do in the process of this death? I keep trying to Google it but there is no step by step process. This is all so overwhelming that I have avoided it for months and I need some guidance. My father didn’t have the opportunity to give us perspective on bills or finances- maybe it felt like telling us how to take care of the bills would solidify his potential death. Please, any advice would save my life. I just don’t know where to start.
My dad passed away in February of this year. He had colon and lung cancer for two years. As you can imagine there are a lot of hospital bills that come from this process.
He was a veteran for the Air Force, he served 7 years, and fought in the Gulf War. Later on he worked at Frito Lay for 20+ years.
My mother is still in the picture but English is her second language- she knows less about this process than I do. She has been attempting to claim his life insurance policies but it feels like they are taking advantage of the situation. I would like to be more informed so I can take care of these situations for her.
What do I do about 401k, insurance policies, retirement funds, veteran’s benefits, etc.?
