As of this writing, he is in possession of 5 of my rent checks. When I asked about it the first time (when he only had 2ish), I was told that the partnership he was involved in that dealt with his properties was dissolving, and the checks were on hold until that was sorted out.

Fine.

I have asked again a few times since then and been met with responses like "They will be deposited on xxxday". I've gotten this response at least twice.

I keep pretty careful track of how much money I have that isn't allotted to expenses like this so this isn't much more than an annoyance to me, unless he is trying to pull some kind of scam that I'm not wise to.

I don't like to have that much money just sitting in my checking account, and it seems like this may be fishy somehow. Do I have anything to worry about here? Do I have any rights or recourse here? Can I claim back the money?

Other than this he's been a pretty good landlord so I don't mean to rock the boat or screw him over in any way. Just looking for some clarity and maybe a solution. And to make sure that he can't claim I never paid him or anything like that. I write checks so that they become receipts..but if he doesn't deposit them..
