I was a passenger in my brother in-law's car and I accidentally "doored" a cyclist in a busy Toronto street. I was on the back door, right side with a bike lane beside me. I know this incident was my fault so I got out of the car while my brother in law pulled over and we both apologized to the cyclist. She had a few scrapes and scatches but insisted that she was okay and did not call the police or take our offer to bring her to a hospital nearby. We exchanged contact information only.

Three days later she calls me and respectfully tell me that her bike has been damaged by the incident. She'd asked me to pay around $90 for replacing her leather strap and $300 to replace her wheel. I verbally agreed given that she presents me an estimate from a bike store.

Now I do not have car insurance and I was kind of surprised with the claim amounts knowing that the bike damages were cosmetic at best (she used her bike after the incident). Also paying this directly through E-transfer makes me feel uncomfortable - what if she decides to charge me for additional items down the line?

Now my burning questions are: Is this the best way to resolve the issue? Or Should I ask my brother in-law to claim it through his insurance? How much proof should I ask of her for these claims?

I feel bad for causing this accident and really just want to resolve this the right way
