I make $60,000 a year, getting paid once at the beginning of each month. My biggest expenses are rent ($850), child support ($900), and my car payment ($400). After all taxes and bills come out (including costs to get to work, groceries, etc.), I have about $550 a month left.

Now, on to the main point, I am really bad at saving. Because of this I usually end the month with about $50 in my account. I rarely contribute to any sort of savings (other than 401k) and I am realizing if I continue this way I will never be able to move forward in life. I just find it hard to motivate myself to put money away.

I don't know where else to go to get ideas on how to improve myself, so I figured I would start here. Any help, tips, advice would be wonderful. Ideas on how to use my excess income to make extra money would also be beneficial.

edit: Removed my age because I don't think its relevant here...

edit: My car payment is $400 a month because I elected to do a two year loan on my car, it will be paid off this December at which point those funds will be available.
