We're planning a move to NZ very soon, and while most of our stuff is getting packed up into boxes and into a storage unit, a fair amount of stuff (still not sure, but maybe 6-8(??) medium boxes 18"x18"x16", and worse, a larger box, at least 25x25x15 and 35-40 lbs, and then an even larger one for a 30" flatscreen monitor) is going to come with us. We hope.

USPS won't handle the largest box I believe and I'm unable to get a quote for the smaller ones (online quote page doesn't work for me). Fedex and UPS said upwards of $1000 (!!) for the big box.

I've been doing some searching and found excess baggage / excess luggage services that will take boxes from your house and deliver it to your other location overseas for significantly cheaper... and I am unsure as to how that works since I believe they are a middle man that sits on top of FedEx/DHL/UPS anyway, so how is it more convenient and cheaper??

And then I found a shipping company - as in actually on a boat (sevenseasworldwide) which is even cheaper but takes about 3-4 months (which would be fine).

Any specific recommendations? I don't need things to show up immediately, so ocean shipping is probably the best since it's the cheapest, but not sure if there are other options, or if ocean shipping is more likely to go badly or get delayed by some ocean disaster, or even if all my stuff will get baked in the hot sun in metal containers for 4 months straight and suffer heat damage, etc..
