I don't currently live in the US South, but I'm planning to move there within a decade and already have bought the land I plan to live on:
- 5 Acres, 15 minutes from town
- Fiber Internet
- Good sun exposure
- On a hill, low flood risk.
- Water rights for a well
- Permission to have a limited number of goats/horses/chickens
- Municipal water and electric available to the land
We plan to custom build the house (well, hire contractors), and have some ideas about how to make it more frugal to live there.
- Solar/Battery system for electricity self-sufficiency
- Because it's humid in the South. A whole-home dehumidifier in addition to normal HVAC
- Building with hail/storms in mind
- Choosing durable materials both external and internal. Heated polished concrete floors, cement composite siding, metal/solar roof. Avoiding wood when possible to prevent pest issues.
- Slab foundation with a pre-fab storm shelter.
- Handicap accessible since my wife and I plan to live in this home for the remainder of our lives
- Conduit to all rooms for future automation projects (you never know where technology is going to end up).
What, if anything am I missing? I'd like a comfortable place that won't be overwhelming to maintain when we're old.
