Hi PF, I'm a 44 year old woman with full time custody of my 14 year old (no child support) who is essentially starting all over again with nothing after a divorce and a year off to study to change careers. Currently, I have very little in the way of assets - a car worth about $1500USD and what's in our tiny unit. I'm about $5000USD in CC debt due to the study but expect to pay that off in my first year back at work. When I do start in my new career next year, I will be on about $78K USD a year (after my student loan repayments).

What I am asking is can I ever get ahead as a single parent? My daughter's school fees are about $4700USD a year (and no, I can't put her in public school - long story). My car is ok at the moment but it's 10 years old and won't last forever. I would love to get into the property market but can't purchase in my area with less than about $24kUSD in savings first. My super (your 401K?) has about $120KUSD in it, which I know is shit for my age.

Look, I'll be honest. I know I'm terrible with money. It seems to slip through my fingers and I know if I don't get my shit together, I'm never going to provide anything of substance for daughter and I.

Can you help me?
