Hi everyone,
I'm 28 years old. I, like many others, made careless choices when I was younger and am still paying for it, quite literally. The how and why of where this debt came from isn't really important, suffice it to say I wish I had been more careful. However, I'm starting a new job on Monday and I want to use this new start after working retail forever to make myself better.
I currently have $7764 in debt spread across 3 cards, 2 of which are closed and in collections. I have never even spoken to collectors, most of whose calls seem to have stopped which makes me even more anxious. The one card I have which is still active has the bulk of the debt at approximately 4100. One closed card is an AmEx with 2315, and the other a Citibank with 1349. I really want to be able to take care of these two closed ones within a year if possible, while maintaining minimum payments on the larger card until I can focus entirely on it.
The new job I'm starting is a contract job for one year in Bellevue, WA. There is no state income tax, so I have that working for me. I will be making $20 an hour, paid weekly, which shows me making $646 per week, for a monthly takehome of $2,584. There is a good chance of rolling this contract into a full time job after it's up according to the person who hired me, but I do want to make as much of a dent as possible within a year so that if I do end up in a position where I have to go back to retail or something with lower pay, I'm better off. To make matters worse, I just called Citibank and they told me to call Client Services, who should have been handling my account collections, and they have no record of my debt after looking up my SSN. I have no idea where to even begin looking to find out how to go about setting up a payment plan. Can someone please help me? My mental health has been suffering for almost 2 years due to this, I'm have anxiety whenever my phone rings, and I just want it to be over.
