This semester, the economics department offered a class on financial economics. Going into the class, I thought we would learn practical investing skills. However, like most things in academics, 99% of the stuff taught is completely useless.

My greatest take away from the class at this point is that investing is made out to be more complex than it should be. We just keep going over formulas that use statistics and calculus to make investment decisions. While yes, these techniques work, there are many other ways to approach investing that are simpler. While this is just one class, it makes me wonder if this is a reason why people are turned off by investing.
