I'm putting everything emotional aside to write this post so it's probably going to sound really callous. Here goes
My grandfather is 73, grandmother is 70. Neither had any sort of retirement besides grandfathers Social Secuirty and a small check he gets from a mine he worked at for 25 years. I can't give you definite numbers at the moment but I believe he makes about $1800 a month. Grandmother is on disability and gets a $730 check every month. She uses $500 of it to pay for a drug maintenance program and has $200ish left to do whatever with. She has no budgeting and she has never had to pay bills.
Grandfather keeps putting off getting burial insurance and I don't know why. I've begged and pleaded with him and things are just left in the air.
The only people who would/could pay for his funeral is me, my uncle and maybe my grandfathers siblings. This is a big "maybe" for all of us.
He has stage 4 cancer and had an excellent credit score but not hospital bills have ruined it. Before treatments started, I asked if he would want to use his credit card to pre pay for funeral/cremation but he didn't give me an answer and it's becoming harder and harder to bring up.
My grandmother said "You've basically started digging his grave." Which broke my heart but no one has planned ANYTHING. I'm literally the only person who is being logical (because I can't process it still) and I've tried to explain that we HAVE to do this stuff now or everything is going to be s mess.
I've looked up KY laws with wills to see how easy it would be to get a will notarized giving everything to my grandmother and it's pretty easy but he still hasn't done it.
I'm worried the hospital bills will mess up my grandmothers life after he's gone. To make matters more or less complicated, I do not know, my grandparents are not legally married. They've been together for fifty years. My oldest aunt is a drug addled mess and I fear she will try and take everything she can from my grandmother after he's gone, or worse, the local funeral home takes property to pay for funerals and my grandmother will not have a home to live in afterwards or even money from the land it sits on.
What do I do, how can I make them see this is headed for a shit show
