Budget: No more than $2,500 for frame.
Size: King
My mattress: a 9'' or 10'' pure latex mattress I'm ordering from Sleep EZ. It can weigh 160-200lbs from what I've read. They require 3'' slat spacing at a minimum.
Current Bed: Modus Riva Espresso
Beds I've considered so far:
Ikea Brimnes
Northern Naturals / Nomad
Zinus Extra Strong Metal Frame
Various adjustable beds
Tempur-pedic's 2'' ultra low foundation
Requirements:
12-18'' height not including mattress.
Great slats, no more than 3'' apart.
Sturdy/stable/quiet/BIFL
Mattress needs to be higher than the sides.
Need to be able to stretch out.
Modern/Contemporary Stylish
Dislikes:
No sleigh beds.
So for style Hemnes = bad. Malm/Brimnes = good.
My ideal bed would be something like the Ikea Brimmes but I don't consider this bed model to be BIFL. It's close, but its a miss on the quality front. The bed itself is particle board. The inside frame itself is metal but the only slats they offer is bowed, which after speaking to my mattress manufacturer they don't recommend bowed slats with their mattress. The slats are really flimsy particle board junk too. The headboard must be mounted against a wall for safety as it can't stand on its own with the bed frame. I really do like the storage option
My past experience with cheap beds is I've broken them. On my old bed (not an Ikea but a Modus Riva the slats have broken so I ended up replacing them with 2x4s. The center beam also broke so I had to make my own center support legs as well. Then the headboard came detached from the braces as it's particle board. Then the side rails came off. I'd rather not have to deal with that frustration again. I want a no hassle bed. If I did the Ikea bed I'd probably would end up cutting my own slats and I don't even want to deal with that again. I could use these universal slats but then I'd have to have 14 of them (7 packages of 2) to meet the manufacturer's spacing guidelines to prevent sagging. That is really expensive. Edit: Just saw Tempur-pedic's ultra low foundation. This may work out well for the Ikea bed.
I'm ideally looking for something stylish and modern. My current bed, dresser, and nightstands is in espresso so it needs to be coordinated.
Northern Naturals/Nomad is currently my top consideration. The beds themselves look pretty plain. I have an email out to them if they can stain it espresso, and I could probably do it myself since they have an unfinished option. I really like how they're solid wood, have a lot of options for slats and reinforcement, and they're easy to assemble.
The Zinus Extra Strong Metal frame is my second pick. I'd have some customization to do though as there are reports of latex mattresses sagging through the 5.5'' spacing of the metal slats. Some options have involved cutting plywood or putting heavy duty moving boxes on it. The frame also has an issue with mattresses sliding around it so I'd have to investigate if a rubber mat would work to prevent that. Then I don't know what to do for style (no bed skirts!). Some people are able to stuff it in other frames.
Third is Ikea Hacking with the metal frame or the universal slats. I don't know how I'd go about it exactly until the bed was mostly assembled so I could measure it out. Anything I do would probably interfere with the drawers though, so I may have to choose a similar style non drawer one.
I've considered the adjustable beds but besides lacking style and feeling geriatric, I don't think I'd make much use of one. I'm a stomach sleeper so I doubt I'd sleep with any incline at all unless I learn to sleep in a semi Fowler's position, which medically is the ideal sleep position but is hard to learn. The other deal breaker is it seems like most of them are only 6-8'' high. And all of them for a king are split which I've read is really annoying for a single guy like myself.
