TLDR: Make a preparedness kit for yourself/family so you aren't scrambling. Make it stuff you like so that you'll actually use it if it doesn't last more than a year's time.
One thing my dad taught me growing up was to buy all the stuff you needed BEFORE hurricanes ever came. We lived in Texas at the time, not too far inland from the coast, and tropical storms, hurricanes, or even just severe weather with flooding were always a threat in the late summer.
In January/February my dad updated our hurricane kit, ensured everything wasn't going to expire, etc. We had a plastic waterproof box of our favorite dried foods that only need water to cook, a generator he'd fire up every year for a while, water and when technology caught up Sawyers too, an outdoor solar shower, a kettle and a propane camping stove. Right before hurricane season, we'd fill up gas tanks.
If a hurricane threatened us, we didn't run out to the stores last minute where things run out, lines are long, and prices are ridiculous. If it was for sure to hit, we washed all the clothes the day before, and we'd fill one of our bathtubs with water. That way we'd have semi-fresh water to flush toilets and bathe with. (we'd take a couple buckets and wash up in the other bathroom.)
