My SO banks with PNC and has been absolutely bombarded with overdraft fees in the past 24 hours. Apparently PNC rearranged the order of his transactions over this past weekend and cleared a more recent, larger transaction prior to smaller ones made earlier, resulting in multiple over draft charges for the smaller transactions. He discovered this yesterday morning and called to sort out the mess and was told it was because he had opted in to over draft protection. He claims to never have opted in to this. He asked the gentleman on the phone if he could freeze the transactions being processed because his direct deposit was to hit the account at midnight and was told yes. He made a sandwich to take to work yesterday and all was well.
This morning he wakes up to check his account to find that the freeze was never put into place, and he was hit with even more fees which ate almost his entire paycheck. He takes full responsibility for making that one large transaction when he shouldn't have. He wasn't thinking and didn't realize he would have put his account into the negative because of it and should have waited until after he was paid.
My question is has anyone else been in this situation with PNC? Does he have any recourse?
For clarification: he's getting these $35 fees per each OD charge cleared. These charges are $10-$15 each. Had they been processed first (these charges were made first chronologically) there would have been funds and just the larger charge ($150 iirc) would have gotten the $35 fee.
Thank you in advance everyone!
