A conversation came up tonight with acquaintance. He said I should go into something that pays really well. Money is important. It really affects lifestyle. On the opposite end, I said you should go into something that you enjoy. The one I chose paid less than $30k/year.
I don't know if I'm being cocky/ignorant (I try to be neither), but I believe i can live on that amount fine and I don't think making a lot of money would make me much happier. I don't plan on having kids, so I don't need to worry about buying a gigantic house in the gentrified suburbs. More importantly, I'm a very frugal person. I'm willing to make some decisions that are inconvenient but save a lot of money in the long run (live with roommates, go carless, etc.). My hobbies are cheap. I did a budget and there's a decent amount of savings.
So I think I can live on less than $30k a year with no problem.
People who are actually doing it though, what is it like? Are you living paycheck to paycheck? Do unforseen expenses add a lot of stress? What's it like? Do you feel limited? Is the lifestyle you live significantly worse than peers who are more wealthy?
