22 male just graduating from school. Got a ~ $80K starting salary in a project-based industry where you're expected to deliver without any stipulations.
It's not as bad as banking. Probably 60 hour weeks and we still get weekends and (usually) early Fridays. Is it worth it? I would get home past 7-8 and still have some errands to do before bedtime. I can't fit my 2 hour gym routine in as often as I'd like, and I'll end up eating out more than I should just to save time and energy.
The career trajectory and salary growth is great, but the hours aren't going anywhere. You're well past $150k by your early-mid 30s, but there's literally no life aside from weekends. Are standard engineering "industry" jobs really 40 hours a week asides the occasional overtime, and is it worth sacrificing your life for a great career boost?
I could always swap in a few years if I don't like it, but I think the extra time during weekdays would just be wasted on youtube/tv shows or other unproductive crap. But at least I could fit a hobby in? I have no debt or "obligations" to fulfill. The money would probably be stashed towards a house down payment or wasted on a car nicer than what I "should" get.
Would you have traded your personal/social life from early 20s for a great career, or do you wish you did?
