My Grandpa who I was close to passed away suddenly Monday night and the funeral is this Saturday. I don't own any suits and I'm really hesitating to buy one for a one time event. I'm a 30 year old man. The biggest reason is I'm on a ketogenic diet and I've lost 125 lbs over the past two years, going from 350 to 225 lbs. My goal weight is 165 lbs. In this time I've gone from a 54'' waist down to a 40'' waist. Just two months ago I was a 44'' waist. So any suit I buy just simply won't be fitting well in a few months as I still have a bunch of weight to lose.
When I was 275 lbs I made the mistake of buying a suit for a one time event. I've lost so much weight that no tailor couldn't take it in, like for example the pockets on the pants would overlap and touch each other. Off the rack fused suits start at $250 here without tailoring, probably $450 for something I'd be okay wearing with minor alterations (pants and arm length.) I'm already having to travel out buying hotel and last minute plate tickets. I'm debating just wearing nice khaki dress pants with a very nice black dress shirt that I bought a month ago that fits nicely still. Alternatively, I'd do some cheap $40 black dress pants and a white shirt with a black tie, sans jacket. Thrift stores are a wash for me. I've tried a few today. I'm still a bit hard to fit and most of them are suit seperates that won't look good.
I'm a bit worried about causing any family drama too. I asked my mother for her opinion and got the "every young man needs a suit" talk. She really doesn't grasp my situation that I'd be throwing out $400 minimum for a one time thing and that it hopefully the suit won't longer fit in a few months to a year. I know I wouldn't be disrespecting my Grandpa with anything I'd wear. He's so frugal that if it were up to him he'd have all of us be digging the grave ourselves on the land he owns and lowering him down ourselves to save money on the funeral. I can hear him complaining now about how much money we're spending on his memory.
What's your thoughts?
