Following the birth of my daughter in 2016, our insurance company did not honor the out of pocket maximum. We found this out around February, as our birth bills hadn't come in until then. It took us a while to detangle what was happening, but we started the formal complaint process with our insurance co. in April. The disputed charges were to the tune of approximately $2,000. In May, we got a letter from a collections company. Our hospital had sold "our" debt (should have been our insurance company's). We wrote our insurance company asking why they hadn't paid. We wrote our hospital asking for clarification on the debt. The insurance company told us they would pay what they owed the hospital, and they sent us a letter indicating they had done so. We never got a response from the hospital, and after that, we never got another letter from the collections agency. Since nothing more happened after that, we presumed the matter was taken care of.

However, we just received a letter from the hospital informing us they have started a revenue recapture process against us, to the tune of about $2000. We are up to date on any expenses from them this year. We have made no late payments, except for when we were disentangling last year's illegitimate charges from this year's legitimate charges, and nothing from this year has been sent to collections/whatever, so this can only be a continuation of the charge dispute from last year.

We're going to call both the insurance company and the hospital today, but if history is my teacher, it will take weeks to get concrete answers out of either of them. In the meantime, we're concerned that wage garnering would hurt our credit, and we're also concerned that if we pay the "debt", either out of pocket, or through the garnering system, we won't be able to get our money back.

Also, I simply want this to end. It's been going on half a year now. It needs to be over with.

Advice?
