I hope this hasn't been posted before, but in my years of lurking on this subreddit I've never seen it discussed.
After a rock hit my windshield a few months back I stopped by one of those 'free' rock chip repair places you see camped out in shopping center parking lots. At the time, I was clearly told by my insurance company that my rates would not be affected by the claim--this varies by state, but was told my state qualified. Unfortunately, I took the bait and now that its time to renew my policy, my rates did go up (surprise). While looking at quotes from other companies (leaving current provider for more reasons than just this), they all were substantially more than the quotes i received just 6 months ago, despite an otherwise spotless driving record. One company was able to tell me what I would have paid without the claim and it would have been $100 less for the 6 month period. Since apparently this stays on your record for 3 years, at that rate this rock chip will have cost me $600!!!
If I hadn't gone through my insurance the repair would have cost somewhere closer to $50. I guess I'm too naive, but I really thought I asked all the right questions at the time, being skeptical to begin with. Hopefully this little rant prevents others from doing the same. Do not file an insurance claim for ANY damage costing less (or even slightly higher) than your deductible.
