I know my guy's set himself up poorly here, but I've been dropping little hints and I think he's ready to take some small steps toward retirement savings. (He's the type who needs to be introduced to big changes v slowly. And I don't want to bruise his ego.)

Down to the details:

  • $60k/year/$5k/mo salary
  • est. $3k/month expenses (this is my estimation; he doesn't track expenses)
  • He works for a small business that doesn't offer any company retirement benefits.

He said he's willing to contribute "a few hundred dollars a month" to retirement/investing, but I think I can negotiate that up a bit.

Where do y'all think we should start, r/personalfinance? My first thought was a Roth IRA, but would that be aggressive enough for him at this point?

I appreciate any and all advice! Thanks!
