If you are going to be making a large purchase at a small business, consider paying in cash if they offer a cash discount. In my experience they don't usually advertise cash discounts, so you'll have to ask.
For example, I recently redid my kitchen and purchased the cupboards + granite from a local company (their pricing was already cheaper than the big box stores). I asked if they offer cash discounts, and they do! They gave us 5% off of our $4,000 purchase, which amounts to $200.
Another example - my car is currently in the shop and it needs a $700 repair. I asked about a cash discount, and they offer 10% off of labor (which is about $350) so I'm saving $35.
Some people might prefer to pay via credit card for the points or protection, and that's ok, but it's something worth considering.
