So I recently had a chance to work for a PE firm in Latin America and had to deal with these things called "Sociedades Administradoras" which oversee the processes of the PE funds because these funds are not directly regulated by the government.

I'm curious as to who oversees the funds in more developed regions such as the U.S. and Europe? Is there such a thing as a regulating entity? Is it the government directly through the SEC or its equivalent in European nations? If so, which are these entities?

I have a feeling that these entities exist here just because of the historic conflicts the region has been through and so I'm wondering if it works the same way in other regions.

Thanks for the help!
