In 2014, US citizens were lawfully required to maintain insurance or face a fine. For me, the fine is 2.5% of my gross income which is roughly a $3,600 dollar fine. I'm curently paying about $3,900 a year for insurance. So, I figured I woukwould d just get coverage. The only issue , is my insurance is practically worthless as exhibited by my most recent doctor visit. Some background: Despite having insurance for the last 2.5 years I always told the doctor I preferred to self pay in the manner an uninsured person would to save money. Since in the US, uninsured patients generally pay much less. An example would be my MRI about 8 years ago that costed $500 dollars instead of the $2,800 dollars I would have been charged if I had insurance. However, my coworker told me, in error, that our insurance wasn't worthless and is actually pretty good. So, at my last doctor visit I used my insurance. All went well, no copay, just see the doctor and leave. Well, yesterday I got a bill in the mail for $146 dollars which is $46 more than I would of paid if I did a self pay. So, my questions are:

  1. Is this negotiable?
  2. What are the repercussions of not paying it?
  3. How can I drop my health care insurance and avoid the yearly fee/tax?

Any advice or insight would be appreciated. It feels quite unfair paying $4,000 dollars annually for a useless product that actually costs me more if I use it. :(
