TL; DR Can I use an orbital sander on cedar fence planks, to turn them into shelves? What is the best way to make sure they're smooth for years of pulling out sheets and towels? My wife and I just cedar-lined a small (24" wide and 18" deep) linen closet, using the tongue-and-groove panels you can get at any home improvement store. We just had a cedar fence put in this week, and I asked the guys to leave a few boards so we can make shelves for the closet.I'm not concerned about the looks, but I'm wondering if those fence panels will work the way I want them to. I read something that says I shouldn't use an orbital sander on cedar, but should just sand by hand instead. Is that true? I just tested a board, and it's holding up to the orbital just fine.My main concern is with any roughness or splinters. The shelves need to be pretty smooth in order to not snag towels and sheets. I'm not opposed to painting them to get them smoother, but would a shellac or varnish work better for these purposes?Willing to take any tips you have for this. via /r/DIY http://ift.tt/2tqi2kP
