Hey PF's I really could use some help in making a financial decision. I posted about six months back here Double Jaw Surgery Cost 20k to give a little bit of background information.
Insurance covers the surgery to an extent. Currently, Cignas' argument is that they will on reimburse based on the CPU Codes for Medicare. Great, except this kind of surgery, is not accepted by Medicare, so they are using a similar CPU Code for a different type of jaw surgery for billing. This type of CPU Code will only reimburse 2.9k. I am in the process of finding a solution to this problem with the insurance company.
To schedule the surgery, I have to put down 20%. That is entirely doable; the issue is the remaining 16k has to be pay by surgery day, and insurance will not reimburse until after the surgery. The hospital and anesthesiologist are 100% covered by insurance, and I should not receive a bill if by chance there is a clerical error and it will be after the surgery.
My financial situation is pretty reasonable. I have zero debt (recently got out of debt) except for 4.5k car loan, and my monthly expenses are a little over $800 a month. I was debating on charging 10k to my credit card and transferring it to a 0% interest intro offer a credit card. I would do two incremental transfers and then throw everything I can towards the card (in 15 months) and once I get the insurance reimbursement pay off the card.
I also have about 10k in a Simple Ira plan, which to my understanding I can withdraw up to 10k for medical, educational or first-time home ownership without paying the penalty.
I appreciate the help and guidance. This surgery is something that I medically need, it will substantially improve my life, but the idea of being in so much debt causes me insane anxiety.
