throwaway for reasons
edit I do not believe anyone owes me college tuition, I've already signed a lease for dorms etc, and am just looking at my current financial options :)
Backstory: (you can skip this) I moved out the day I turned 17 (I'm almost 18) due to an extremely toxic home environment. I was paying rent and working but they filed me as a dependent since they still payed my insurance and planned to pay for my college.
Well ffwd to the summer and I don't want to live where I'm at anymore and talk to my grandparents about moving in with them. Right before I move in with my grandparents, i sit down and show my dad the tuition costs etc. and he says he can definitely cover it np. He tells me to think about moving back in with him and my mom. And while I considered it I truly think it would have been a bad decision and terrible for my self esteem and the family in general.
My whole life they told me they would pay for college. They make a considerable amount of money and they can afford it. About 6 months ago I mentioned weather they were going to pay for my college, and my mom said I was overreacting and said I was making them out to be monsters and obviously they were going to pay for it.
Recently they kept dashing me trying to talk about finances, finally I point blank asked my dad, and he says he will not be paying for my college. This was yesterday.... my first bill is August 1st
the important part: please read
So what do I do from here? Thankfully, My grandparents have offered to pay for my first semester until I can figure something else out.
So far I see my options as
• independent status on FASFA. I've heard it's hard to achieve. Does my situation fit the criteria? How do I apply?
• Emancipation. This seems tedious, but it would -I believe- give me the option of filing fasfa easier and getting loans -please give me any information you have on filing for emancipation
•scholarships Idk where to start here, please give me any links etc that you know of
•student loans (can I do this at 18?) my family is heavily against loans and I need to get up to a masters so I don't know if this is a good route.
•loans from my grandparents. But family things can get tricky so hopefully there is a better option.
Please help! Sorry for the length!
TLDR: parents decided not to pay for college 2 weeks before I go to university. What are my options?
