I haven't ever bought a dog of my own, but always had a family dog.

I'm currently making $41,000 a year and have only been at this job for a month and a half. I have about $3,000 saved up (for emergencies). My rent is $450, will be $470 for pet rent with a $200 deposit for the initial pet fee at my apartment. No health issues that would qualify me for a support animal.

My question is- how much should I have saved up specifically for buying a dog/vet costs/pet insurance? And how much should I be putting aside each month?

I haven't even decided whether to get a dog from a breeder, which is what my family has always done, or get one from a shelter.

How can I best budget my money for such a huge change?
