Throwaway for obvious reasons. So i got my current job a few months ago and I absolutely love it. The people, the atmosphere, the work. I'm excited to go to work every day and I've grown my skill set a lot in the last few months. The problem is, Im only making $50000/year and we don't get any benefits (yet). It's a startup (I'm a developer) so they're still working that all out, but I've been told they see me having a future leadership role there. Prior to getting this job I interviewed at another place. Seemed like a dream job. A solid growing company but with a genuinely cool group of people and awesome atmosphere. I ended up not getting the role at the time due to some structural changes within the company. I was really devastated at the time. The day before yesterday I got a call from the recruiter and he said that they wanted to offer me the role as they now need to hire a few more people. I turned him down at $67,500 and full benefits because money isn't everything, right? He came back with $75,000, I turned him down. Yesterday I got a call from the CTO. We talked and he offered me $85k plus benefits: medical, dental, life, and a 401k up to $90k within a year. Plus microbonuses. I asked what changed. Apparently the senior dev there, who I met during the interview, asked for me by name when they realized they needed to hire. I absolutely love the people I work with, the owners, and the environment and the work is fun and varied, but I'm a single mom so turning down $85k is really difficult. I feel really conflicted. I don't think I would dislike working at the new place, it seemed like a dream job when I interviewed, but I also sort of feel like I'd be turning my back on people I care about. However at $50k And no benefits it's tough to live (cost of living is relatively high here). I usually have a gut instinct about these things but I'm at a loss. Do I take the job with higher pay or stick it out where I'm at with the assumption that I'll grow and eventually be making a lot more? I would love any advice. Thanks.
