I'm 24 and just got married, which is a qualifying even for changing health insurance through my employer. On my own I never thought indemnity would be helpful, but my wife's family has a history of some serious illnesses. The cost for our plan is ~$20 pre-tax biweekly. In some of my reading up on the subject I read that hospital stays cost upwards of $10k on average, though I would expect her Blue Cross Blue Shield / PEEHIP (she's a teacher in Alabama) to cover most of the cost of a stay. I'm working on looking into the exact terms of her coverage and will update if I find anything pertinent. I know insurance can be a divisive subject, but I'm curious if anyone has numbers or stories that back up decisions to buy indemnity insurance or pass.
Feedback would be appreciated. Thanks!
