My wife and I rent a 660 ft2 single bedroom apartment with our 2 dogs for $1172 a month. We're both full time students in our last year at the local community college and our only forms of income are our Montgomery GI Bills from our military service.
The GI Bill fluctuates throughout the year and can land us anywhere from $2500-3700 a month depending on how many days the school was active the month prior.
Yesterday (the 19th) we came home to a notice posted on our door indicating that we needed to renew our lease by the end of this month and that the new rent would be 22% higher for the cheapest option (a full year) at $1435 a month. If we sign a renewal, the new price takes effect after August and we pay it September 1st (43 days after the notice), if not we have to move out by the same day.
July is a tough month financially due to a break between the Spring and Summer terms in June. After paying our rent and bills we had just under $200 left to pay for food, gas, and miscellaneous necessities. It's been a tough month but we're making it.
The problem is, we simply can't afford to move right now and if we sign a renewal we won't have enough money to meet our needs when it comes time to buy books or after the next school break (two weeks off in August), the rent hike is just to high.
We did a little bit of searching online, it seems the Lease Office might have violated the law. What we found indicates that in California, landlords must provide 60 day's notice before increasing tent more than 10%, but we would like to hear other opinions and prepare a bit before going to the office.
Thank your for reading this,
Any help/thoughts/advice?
