My partner and I recently moved to the Cupertino area for my new job. My monthly take-home is ~$6500 (after contributing 6% in a Roth IRA), also $25k vested equity each year, and I have the following monthly expenses:

Student loan: ~$250

Car loan: ~$350

Insurance: ~$80

Phone: ~$80

Food: ~$500 (including partner's food)

I also have ~$30k in my savings account as an emergency fund.

And my partner doesn't yet have a job here since we literally just got here.

I've heard things like the 30% rule, and I've also seen some data like this: http://ift.tt/1VoZACp so, I'm not sure how much I can pay and still save.

From my research, I've found some 1 bedrooms around $2200 that fit our needs. We've also done some research into finding roommates, but we haven't been successful so far due to the differences in what each couple wants.

Would paying $2200 be too much for me given my income?
