It's frequently brought up that any company you invest in should have "good" management. How does one determine this? Any company within the S&P 500, for example, is bound to have executives with many years of experience in their respective fields. How do you really determine how competent management is? The clearest proxy I can think of is stock performance or ROIC, but this does not really show the innate competence of management--many factors outside of management's control drive these metrics, and executives aren't the only ones responsible for day-to-day decisions.
Any help clearing this up would be appreciated. Thank you
