I have lived on my own, but the pricing in the area was radically different from where I am now. I know what my family pays for, say, groceries. But my parents are solidly upper middle class, and while their tastes aren't extravagant, they are more expensive than I would go for. So in the case of groceries, they're the kind of people who insist on meat being the main feature of the meal, 2 meals a day. (And I refuse to buy chicken thighs, chicken is not very good to start with and thighs are the worst.)

I know I'm happy eating a lot of vegetarian, or a lot more dishes with small amounts of meat. So my grocery bill would be less, proportionately, than my share of our grocery bill. But I'm not sure how to go about figuring what my cost would be.

And that doesn't even get into things like utilities - when I see an apartment that says you're paying electric, I feel like I have no idea around here of what the electric bill could look like.
