This one's a hard one for me, personally. I was car crazy as a teenager, and through my twenties. I haven't owned a car in three years, but I still look at my favorite types of cars, and I must confess to still experiencing the occasional feeling of car lust.
But as I've been making my journey into simple living, I've been trying to remind myself of the fact that, at its most basic, a car is nothing but a mobile appliance--no different from my refrigerator, microwave, stove, or phone.
If I'm out to buy a refrigerator, microwave, stove, or phone, I take a much different approach than I do to buying a car. When I'm buying an appliance, I'm thinking of practical things first: does this thing do the thing that I need for a reasonable amount of money? And, more importantly, do I need that thing at all?
For me over the last three years, the answer--as far as automobiles are concerned--is no. It may not be for you, but it has been that way for me. For the expense vs. the benefit (i.e. how often do I really need a car to get places), the balance hasn't worked out in favor of owning a car.
That may change. I might get another job further away, or move to a more distant place, whatever. But if I get another car, it's going to be no different than if I go to Sears to buy a microwave. I'll pick the most appropriate appliance to suit my needs.
