I bought two ceiling fans with light kits, and had no problems installing the first one. I followed the manufacturer's instructions, and connecting fan wires to my house's electrical wires was fine. The second fan is giving me a harder time because there are two sets of electrical wires going into the ceiling box. One has black, white, red, and copper wires. The other has black, white, and copper. The setup seems very similar to this post, but that post doesn't answer the questions I have, as my situation seems a bit different.I also didn't pay enough attention to how all the wires were connected to the original light fixture. I foolishly just undid everything before I realized I should have paid attention to the original configuration. The first bundle of wires (black, red, white, copper) is where the power is coming from. The black wire in this bundle is hot, and the red one energizes when the wall switch is turned on. I understand that this red wire would provide a way to control the fan and the light kit separately, but I'm not interested in this (I plan to use a remote to independently control the fan and light). I hope that controlling everything with a single switch makes the wiring more simple. The second bundle of wires looks like it runs to a hallway light, meaning that power flows into the first bundle, and then only to the hallway light if the second bundle is connected to the first.Edit: photo of wires and another photo of wires. Here is a diagram I made, following the manufacturer's instructions for wiring, which worked fine for the first fan, which had only one bundle of wires to connect to, and did not have a red wire involved.I assume I can make all of the connections outlined in pink in that diagram, as those follow the manufacturer guidelines. I also assume that I'd connect the wires from the second bundle to their respective colors in the first bundle/fan connections (i.e. connect matching colors from the first and second bundles and then connect those with the proper fan wires). If my above assumptions are correct, my question is: what do I do with the red wire? Do I twist it up with one of the other connections? Tape it out of the way? via /r/DIY http://ift.tt/2rwgVgU
