Very frugal parents. We were lower middle class and found every way imaginable to save money. Grew up without heat or air conditioning, patched clothes, and simple meals.
Buddhist upbringing which gave me a head start against materialism.
Military which gave me the discipline, focus, taste of nomadic lifestyle, and experiencing different cultures. Probably most beneficial for this journey of ours.
Doesn't always have to be positives. In fact, having a gambleholic parent further reinforced that money isn't everything. That I can recognize addiction when I see it like with most people and buying things.
