So I just got accepted to work for my school district's IT department over the summer as part of a paid internship they do. I'm expected to make around $2.6k by the end of the summer. From what my parents have told me, I should expect to have about a third of this taxed, apparently because I have no dependents. Can I get an explanations as to: What a dependent is, and why the lack of one would affect my tax so heavily?
