After checking my credit for the first time in years, I found an old medical bill that went to collections in 2013. After reading in other threads, I decided to send a pay and delete letter to the collection agency and offered to pay off the debt for 1/3 of the total owed. I stated in the letter that I didn't acknowledge the debt as being mine, but offered to send them a cashiers check to pay the debt in full. I also stated that it would hopefully avoid them having to validate the debt. I was hoping I would at least get an offer letter back or that they would settle, but instead I received a letter with the debt validation, telling me the account would remain disputed. I don't have the money to pay the debt in full. But what I noticed is that the debt validation letter showed a different amount owed than what it shown on my credit report. I'm wondering if disputing this directly to the credit bureau would get any results? Or should I try to renegotiate with the collection agency? I called SkyBlue credit repair and they said there was nothing they could do for me, that I had to deal directly with the collection agency. I asked them about medical debts falling off of credit reports after 7 years, and SkyBlue said that the collection agency can keep renewing the debt once 7 years is up. I'm open to suggestions if anyone would like to comment.
