I hope this is the right place, for this. Apologies if it isn't!

My insurance company just scrapped my shiny newish RAV4 4WD, and now I need to replace it. I liked that car and it did me well, but I wouldn't mind getting something a little more affordable both sticker and gas-wise, and am looking at a used matrix or something similar.

I'm trying to decide how much I really need 4wd. Subarus are pretty spendy out here. I live in Canada in a rural area part way up a mountain This winter was a bit freaky and we had 3-4 feet of snow on the ground for almost 4 months, but usually it's not so bad. The road gets plowed most days, but my Rav did get stuck in my driveway for a couple weeks until we plowed and I got winter tires on it. (For reference, my other half's F-350 4wd with all-seasons had no problem navigating)

I don't mind paying more for the right vehicle, cause I have a toddler I have to transport, but I'm wondering if a 2wd car with good snow tires would do just as well.

So if there are any armchair experts out there who know about 2wd vs. 4wd I'd love to hear your opinions.

Thanks!
