This is less of a 'buy it for life' and more of a 'I need this for the next three months, but I need it to work really well', and for air conditioning I'm making the assumption that the two concepts are one in the same. Ideally I'd like to have it for life, but I especially need it in the near future.
I live in a house where the windows will not accommodate a window AC unit, so I have to go with a portable one. I live in New England so summers aren't unbearable, but they're humid the house is usually between 85-105 degrees depending on the day. I bought an Insignia brand portable AC a few months ago and it's terrible. I think it's made for a 10x10 room or a college dorm kind of situation, but the room we're trying to cool is probably around 350 square feet.
I've heard good things about the Whynter ARC-122DS, but they seem to be sold out almost everywhere.
