My husband rear-ended another vehicle last week. He gave the driver with our insurance information, but also told the driver that we'd like to consider paying out of pocket for repairs if they were OK with it. The driver said he's willing to do that, and got a quote. We just received the copy of the repair quote, a total of ~$1800. I've done my research and the quote is reasonable for the work being done, and everything included is a repair as a result of the damage.

If we pay cash for the repair, what do we need to do to protect ourselves? The other driver has our insurance information, so I want to make sure he doesn't try to "double-dip" and run off with cash/check for a repair. Do we pay him and have him sign some sort of release of liability? Do we pay the repair shop directly? How do we make sure he doesn't then submit a claim to our insurance?

I've never been in this situation before, so any help from those who know best practices for this kind of arrangement would be much appreciated!
