Trying to find a good way to build some overhead storage into my garage. The garage is finished, both drywall and mud/paint. I have no idea if the beams in the ceiling are 2 x 4 or larger. I tried going up in the crawlspace tonight but that area of the house is cut off from the area where the AC is. I have attached a photo to show you the area I'm working with, I'm not sure if there is a good way to build overhead storage without knowing the size of the beams in the ceiling or if I have to cut a hole in the ceiling to check. My initial plan is to build a horizontal beam around the three sides that have existing walls with 2x4, tied into the wall studs. This wooden "structure" would serve as a shelf to set the floor of the storage area on. I would then have to tie the front side of the storage area to the ceiling somehow to support it on the remaining fourth side. This is the part of the project that I am unsure of, I have Read in other diy threads that if my ceiling is constructed of 2 x 4's, it is not designed to hold additional weight beyond the drywall.I certainly don't want to compromise the structure of my ceiling, this is not a two-story house so I don't have additional weight beyond the insulation and roof above my garage ceiling.I will try and edit a photo to put out an image of what I'm trying to describe when I am not on my phone. via /r/DIY http://ift.tt/2qI9zK6
