I noted a derogatory mark on my credit report the other day and upon some investigation found out that it's my brother's medical debt that was sent to collections. I'm not entirely sure of how, but even though he was the patient and his insurance covered the cost of the blood work the debt was sent to me.
The collections agency says that I just need to send a letter requesting a name change on the debt, but I'm wondering if there are any additional steps I need to take to rectify the issue quickly. My score took a huge ding and I'm hoping to start renting soon and I'm in the middle of the security clearance process. My parents say that I may have grounds to sue, but I'm not so sure.
